Leg Length Pain

A leg length discrepancy is simply having one leg that is longer than the other. There can be many causes, but the most common are: a growth plate injury during childhood or adolescence, a fracture in the leg that does not heal properly, surgery, such as a knee or hip replacement, and spinal abnormalities such as scoliosis. The most common symptom associated with a leg length discrepancy is backache. Other symptoms on the long leg side can include hip pain, medial knee pain, plantar fasciitis, and metatarsalgia. Symptoms affecting the short extremity can include lateral knee pain or Achilles tendinitis.

Treatment and Prevention of Leg Length Discrepancies

Your doctor can perform a few simple tests to determine if your symptoms are due to a leg length discrepancy, and if so they will usually prescribe a Heel Lift. These lifts are available in different sizes up to ½ inch, and some are adjustable. If a lift is needed greater than ½ inch it is advisable to have a lift incorporated into the sole of the shoe. We do this type of work and can lift most types of shoes, depending on the sole material.
