Orthopedic Shoes

Orthopedic footwear is simply footwear that is fabricated with certain comfort features that can help alleviate foot, ankle, knee, hip, and back problems or other medical abnormalities. Such features include long medial counters and anatomically contoured footbeds. These features help control heel stability and will evenly distribute the wearer's weight over the entire surface of the foot. This promotes proper foot function, relieving the muscles of the foot and legs, therefore providing for proper gait and spine alignment.

Many orthopedic shoes are made with extra-depth. This extra vertical space in the shoe makes it possible to adapt the shoes to an individual wearer's specific needs. For example, if a person has specific pain sites on the foot associated with ulcers, calluses, neuromas, plantar fasciitis, or heel spurs, we can customize inlays or fabricate orthotics to help relieve these painful areas. Special inlays made out of a self-molding material called plastazote can also be fabricated to help diabetic or arthritic feet. Also, the uppers of some extra-depth shoes are made out of elastic and/or soft and supple leathers. This type of material along with a deep, wide toe box can accommodate and help alleviate the pain associated with hammer toes, corns, bunions, and swollen feet.

We work closely with area physicians to provide their patients with proper footwear, orthotics, and external shoe modifications. We also provide such footwear to the general public who have so-called "normal" feet. But a large majority of these so-called "normal" feet have minor problems which can benefit from the wearing of properly-fitted comfort and orthopedic footwear.
